Travel insurance needed as over 500,000 passports lost - 12/06/2008

New research carried out by Halifax Home insurance has revealed that over half a million British tourists either have their passport stolen or lose their passport every year.
The research highlights the need for travel insurance as a typical lost or stolen passport while on holiday costs around £131 in extra accommodation and rescheduled flights, not to mention the additional costs of replacing the passport.
The report also looked at where passports were most typically lost and found that 12 per cent of passports were lost in airports, while another 11 per cent were lost or taken from hotel rooms.
These figures really highlight the need to travel with insurance as the nightmare of losing a passport is increased tenfold if you do not have anywhere to turn to in a crisis such as this.
Paul Birkhead from Halifax Travel Insurance suggested that as “losing your passport abroad is a guaranteed nightmare and we always advise taking several photocopies of the back page with you, just in case something happens to it.”
He said that doing this will “help to speed the process up and avoid delays on the return leg of your trip, which is not only costly, but can cause serious hassle - especially if you''re due back at work. Of course if you have a decent travel insurance policy then it is likely that much of the expense will be covered by your insurer.”
