Recent research from insurance agency Esure has revealed that those opting for adventure holidays where they take part in dangerous activities still believe that standard travel insurance will cover them despite warnings that specialist insurance is needed.
Adventure holidays are fast becoming the norm, with the younger generation keen to take part in adventure sports such as snowboarding and many venturing out for the experience of a bungee jump or a rock climbing session.
And even the older generation are getting in on the action with more and more older travellers opting to take part in once in a lifetime adventures such as free falling or white water rafting.
A whole 25 per cent of British holidaymakers say that they would chose their holiday destination based on the availability and quality of adventure sports available there.
And a huge 88 per cent have taken part in adventurous activities while on holiday despite not deliberately choosing their destination based on those factors.
Despite the popularity of such activities, one in ten believe that standard travel insurance will provide cover in the event of an accident.
Unfortunately, this is not the case and many have found themselves footing hefty hospital bills abroad as they mistakenly thought that they were covered.
Mike Pickard, from esure, said: "With a surge in popularity of, and access to, more adventurous sports across the globe, it's crucial for holidaymakers to take out travel insurance and check they're covered before they try out the likes of white water rafting in Australia...Get injured and the medical bills could turn a paradise trip into a nightmare."
The most popular adventure sports for us Britons to take part in on our holidays abroad were scuba diving, jet skiing and white water rafting. All of these activities require specialist cover.
