A number of British holidaymakers that have travelled within Europe, had decided not to take out travel insurance, as they believed that holding a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) was enough to cover them, while they were away, according to American Express Insurance Service
The EHIC provides UK travellers with free or discounted healthcare, depending on the countries they travel to within Europe. However, the card does not cover holidaymakers in the event of flight cancellations, repatriations or curtailments, which several holidaymakers are faced with when they go away. American Express Insurance Service has advised Britons that they should not be confused with the cover that the EHIC offers.
Previous research conducted in 2006, by the insurance provider has shown that clarification, as to what the card covers has not improved, leaving millions of Britons at risk, when they are away in Europe
Chris Rolland, Head of American Express Insurance Services said: "With so many Brits planning a summer holiday in Europe this month, travellers should be careful not to rely on European Health Insurance Cards. They are not a substitute for comprehensive travel insurance so you will not be covered for delays, loss of baggage or cancellations or experience other benefits of having an independent travel insurance policy.
"EHIC cards are solely for emergency medical treatment in Europe and people must make sure that they have independent, quality travel insurance to ensure that they have comprehensive cover to avoid any unwanted financial difficulties. We offer up to a nine per cent discount on our European Travel policies for customers who have an EHIC, which entitles UK residents to free or a reduced cost of healthcare depending on the country they are visiting."
