Winter Travel Insurance Essential
|
The number of Brits jetting away for a winter break has increased dramatically over the past few years. With millions of Britons heading away for winter sports breaks and to winter sun destinations the trend for an annual winter holiday continues. Figures from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office show that almost all Brits are now taking a winter holiday every year. Flight company Air Malta announced this week that it took a record 50,000 passengers away on winter holidays this winter.
Skiing has become increasingly popular, no longer the preserve of the rich and famous thanks to cheap flights and holiday packages. Many find good deals online for their skiing break. A sure-fire way to save money on your skiing holiday is to go out of season, which many opt for.
An out of season skiing trip seems like the perfect way to afford a usually expensive winter sporting holiday. The flights and accommodation will be cheaper, equipment hire will also be cheaper and the slopes will be free from hoards of other holiday makers. With the slopes all to yourself you can practise to your hearts content, with the space to try more daring moves and less people to see you fall flat on your face!
Many Brits took advantage of this years early Easter to head off on an end of season ski break. Many found that taking an out of season ski holiday was not always such a perfect arrangement. There is of course a reason why it is out of season. As the weather gets warmer, the slopes start to melt. In some cases this leads to the piste being completely closed to holidaymakers.
The rising popularity of off peak holidays which come with the risk of events such as piste closure, highlight the need to take out specialist travel insurance before heading away on your winter break. Many winter sports insurance policies cover you in the event of piste closure, according the British Insurance Brokers Association.
A number of keen skiers arrived at their proposed destination with all their equipment only to find that they were not allowed on the slopes as the ski slopes simply were not there. Others found that although they were welcomed onto the slopes, some areas had melted leading to exposed areas of rock and gravel.
Degraded slopes out of season not only hamper your skiing experience but pose a danger to skiers. Anyone heading off on a skiing holiday needs to take out specialised winter sport insurance to cover against such injuries. Specialist cover will protect expensive skiing equipment and injuries which your standard insurance is unlikely to cover.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office reported that 10% of British people heading away on skiing holidays suffer injuries on the slopes. It also noted that for snowboarders and skiers alike, serious injuries are on the increase. In order to protect against the disappointment of piste closure or the more serious event of an accident on the slopes, make sure that you have the correct policy for your winter break.
