A recent report has claimed that, van drivers and other motorists feel more confident in their driving when they use a satellite navigation (sat nav) system.
Van insurance customers, who may be already aware of the benefits of using a sat nav, were given greater reasons of the advantages of using the device. Jenny Hodge, the public relations manager for the sat nav manufacturer, TomTom commented on the positive aspects of using a sat nav.
Research that was carried out by the manufacturer, along with TNO found that drivers using a sat nav had “heightens awareness” and had lower stress levels while they drove. It was also found that 74 per cent of drivers felt “more in control” when using their sat nav.
Ms Hodge also said: "In addition, use of a sat nav reduces the number of miles driven and the time spent travelling, which in turn has a positive effect on the environment and fuel costs."
However motorists were advised by the Worcester police force, to keep their sat navs out of sight and to remove all traces of the device when they are away from the car. A police spokesperson added that doing so could lower the chance of a van driver of making a claim on their van insurance policy.
